Just this month, a keychain pepperspray once again protected the safety of a woman– this time, 77-year-old Gladys Gehrig. Not only did Gehrig protect herself from potential assault, she stopped a “one-man crime spree” that had been plaguing the southside of Jacksonville, FL for over a month.
When Torre Harris put a gun to the head of a convenience store clerk and demanded money, he committed his seventh robbery in Florida. After robbing the Kangaroo Express, the 20-year-old also tried to snatch the purse of a store patron. Gladys Gehrid probably appeared to be an easy target.
However, Gehrig fought back with her pepperspray and not only kept her purse, but stopped the crime spree altogether. Police Chief David Stevens stated, “She got him good in the face,” and because of the spray, police were able to pick him up a short distance away. Harris was charged with 14 felonies and wasn’t granted bail.
Pepperspray, in this case as in so many others, was effectively used for self defense. But not only did it protect its owner, it helped prevent crime for a whole city. Read more about the incident in the Jacksonville here, and purchase your own self defense spray here
